Design Thinking

WEEK 1

This week I used the design thinking process to design a wallet for my partner in class. I started with designing a wallet for my partner first just based on looking at them and judging them without asking any questions and basing it on what will net suit them. In the next process I interviewed my partner twice and came to find out she actually does keep a photo of her family in her wallet which I had included a place for a photo in my original wallet design, however she keeps her coins in a separate pouch. I also found out she also usually takes a bag with her when she goes out. In the third process I struggled the most as I found it difficult to capture my partners goals and wishes as this was something new to me I had never thought about when it came to the process of designing. This then made it hard for me to continue with step 4- coming up with a point of view. However I continued to do some final designs. I found this process gave me a better insight into the design process and what goes into it. Hopefully I will improve in the future tasks. I have attached some pictures below of the process.

WEEK 2

Last week we started our group work and we decided on the topic of disruptor. We started off by brainstorming areas and industries that are already distrusted and possible areas that we can disrupt. As we focused on potential areas we came up with the fashion industry and started to create a mind map. Stemming from that we came up with ethical buying and the idea of an app resonated with us as it would be a good way to bring awareness to the fast fashion industry. As we continued we thought about possible users and started to create a persona for our user. We decided on the persona of young teens however we were still unsure if this would be our target audience.  We finished off the class with doing a journey map of our user. I think we should have undertaken a some more research in this stage.

WEEK 3

This week we came to the define stage and continued brainstorming. The tool we used in this stage was affinity diagrams. We started with brainstorming ideas that related to our design of the app using clear concise words. We all shared ideas and wrote on sticky notes our ideas. After this we grouped them in their correct ‘affinity’ as shown below. We then started to brainstorm for each one again, this is where we tried to be more specific as we started off very broad. We also started to think of our problem statement, the problems that came to mind were, the polluting effects of fast fashion and how we bridge the gap between ethical fashion stores and the user. Coming up with this problem statement became a bit tricky. In this stage we also decided that our user would be females aged 20-25. However we still were not very clear with our problem statement.

WEEK 4

This week we continued on the define stage and we started to really think about what our problem statement is. We brainstormed potential statements on the board and crossed out many and reworded them. This led us to defining our problem statement: How might technology be used to provide young adults with access to ethical buying standards to reduce their contribution to pollution caused by fast fashion. however we were still unsure about whether it was broad enough or whether it could still be improved. We also struggled with wording it but were still happy with our final statement.

WEEK 5

This week we worked on the ideation phase. The phase of getting creative. We started to brainstorm for the app things such as the logo the layout the map page, the login page and the different pages that the app will have. We started with brainstorming possible names for the app. We first thought of the different names that there are for apps and we started our brainstorming with names such black sheep, closet tree. We also went back to our problem statement from last week and started to become clearer and reword it a bit better. We also each drew what we thought the app would look like on the home page and the other pages and discussed what we vision the app looking like. We thought of a map that would contain elements such as pins, markers and icons. Our design would revolve around the name, ‘Black Sheep’. A short yet effective name.

WEEK 6

This week we started the prototyping stage of the design process. We started to brainstorm and draw logo ideas and how we want our icon to look like, we also started to go further in depth and draw what each page would look like, we realised we hadn’t thought in depth about the pins for our app and what each pin would represent.

WEEK 7

This week we continued with the ideation stage. We cut out some cardboard to make our p hone and also thought of designing our page for one of our team members to create on the computer. We thought of the idea of sliding through each page of the app through the cardboard phone as our prototype. We got creative and this stage was very enjoyable.
